1. ICT LEADERS FROM GHANA, EGYPT AND ZIMBABWE HAIL ETHIOPIA'S NEW AI UNIVERSITY AS A MODEL FOR THE CONTINENT
Speaking to Ethiopia's state news agency ENA, in an article carried by AllAfrica on 27 July, ICT sector leaders from Ghana, Egypt and Zimbabwe praised Ethiopia's establishment of its first Artificial Intelligence University (AIU) as a strategic step toward African data sovereignty and homegrown AI innovation. FloodGates International founder Oswald Wedam Anonadaga argued the university should function as a hub for AI research, entrepreneurship and talent development rather than a conventional academic institution, and pointed to Ghana's One Million Coders initiative as inspiration for the scale of national AI-training ambition Ethiopia could pursue. Deaf Gain co-founder Alshimaa Elbahrawy called for the university to build in disability-inclusive access from the outset, while Accountability Lab's McDonald Lewanika stressed that data sovereignty – “data itself is the new oil” – should be a core design principle, requiring investment in secure local infrastructure and governance alongside the teaching mission.
Why this matters for AI academies: A purpose-built national AI university, explicitly designed around local context rather than imported curricula, is a live model worth studying regardless of whether your academy is in Ethiopia – particularly the panel's emphasis on the university functioning as an entrepreneurship and talent hub, not just a teaching institution, and on building disability-inclusive access in from day one rather than retrofitting it later. Academies could reasonably approach Ethiopia's AIU, or the ICT leaders quoted here, about partnership, curriculum-sharing or guest-lecture opportunities as the institution stands itself up.

2. SMART AFRICA AND FAO OPEN INNOVATE AFRICA CHALLENGE 2026, SEEKING ONE AI SOLUTION FOR CLIMATE-SMART AGRICULTURE TO DEPLOY ACROSS FIVE COUNTRIES
On 28 July, Smart Africa and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) opened applications for the third edition of the Innovate Africa Challenge, themed “From Ideation to Deployment.” Unlike earlier editions, which focused on identifying promising ideas, this year's challenge is deliberately narrow: it will select just one proven AI-driven climate-smart agriculture solution and fund its deployment, validation and demonstration inside a Smart Africa member state, working directly alongside national agriculture, ICT and innovation ministries plus FAO country offices. Applications are open only to startups, innovators and solution developers based in Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda or Uganda, and the solution must already be technologically mature rather than an early-stage concept – priority areas include precision agriculture, crop yield forecasting, pest and disease early-warning, climate risk modelling and water-resource optimisation. Applicants must also demonstrate responsible-AI practices, bias mitigation and compliance with farmer data rights. The application deadline is 31 August 2026.
Why this matters for AI academies: This challenge is explicitly looking for solutions that work under the real conditions African smallholder farming actually presents – patchy data, low connectivity, multiple languages, diverse agro-ecological zones – which makes the eventual case study a genuinely useful teaching example rather than a lab demo. Academies in the five eligible countries with advanced students or alumni working on agri-AI should flag this opportunity to them directly, and all academies can use the challenge's stated priority areas (precision agriculture, yield forecasting, pest detection, climate risk modelling, water optimisation) as a live check on what funders now consider “deployment-ready.”

3. LAUREATE EDUCATION SIGNS THREE-YEAR AI DEAL WITH GOOGLE CLOUD FOR 500,000 STUDENTS ACROSS MEXICO AND PERU
On 29 July, Laureate Education – which operates five higher-education institutions across Mexico and Peru serving roughly 500,000 students – announced a three-year agreement with Google Cloud to deploy Gemini Enterprise, Gemini for Education, Google Workspace for Education and Google Cloud Skills Boost across its university network. The initiative is intended to personalise learning, modernise teaching and operations, and build cloud and AI career-readiness skills among students and faculty, alongside implementation and change-management support tailored to each institution's local academic and regulatory requirements. Laureate CEO Eilif Serck-Hanssen framed the deal around faculty rather than technology alone: “Technology alone does not transform education, educators do.”
Why this matters for AI academies: This is a concrete, large-scale example of a Latin American higher-education network negotiating a multi-year AI capability deal with explicit faculty-development and change-management components, not just software licences – a template worth studying if your academy is negotiating its own cloud or AI-vendor partnership. Academies in Mexico, Peru or elsewhere in Latin America may find direct value in reaching out to Laureate's network or Google Cloud's LATAM public-sector team to understand what training resources may become available regionally.

4. ANALYSIS: AS THE US AND CHINA SPLIT INTO INCOMPATIBLE AI ECOSYSTEMS, AFRICA'S CHOICE OF “AI TECH STACK” BECOMES A GEOPOLITICAL DECISION
In an analysis published 28 July, technology executive Rowen Pillai argued that the global AI landscape is fracturing into two increasingly incompatible ecosystems – a premium, high-cost US stack (frontier closed models running as high as $11.25 per million tokens) and a cost-optimised, open-weight Chinese stack (as low as $1.71 per million tokens, backed by domestic chips to bypass export controls). For African and other developing economies, the piece argues this is no longer a simple procurement choice: China is now the primary trading partner for 78 Global South countries and has built, financed or operates more than a third of Africa's commercial ports, making the cheaper Chinese AI stack a “path of least resistance” that could lock countries into a single technology ecosystem – down to the hardware layer – well before they have weighed the trade-offs. The analysis recommends developing economies deliberately build redundancy, modularity and heterogeneity into national AI infrastructure rather than defaulting to either superpower's stack.
Why this matters for AI academies: Curriculum built entirely around one country's AI ecosystem – its tools, its terminology, its assumptions about cost and access – risks leaving graduates unprepared if that ecosystem's terms change or a national policy shift pushes local industry toward the alternative stack. Academies should consider deliberately exposing students to both open-weight and closed-model approaches, and to the cost and sovereignty trade-offs discussed here, rather than defaulting to whichever tools are simply easiest to access today.

5. EGYPT'S KONECTA AI HUB GROWS TO 600 STAFF, ON TRACK FOR 800 BY YEAR-END, PART OF $100M INVESTMENT PLAN
On 29 July, following a ministerial visit to its New Cairo headquarters, Spanish customer-experience and digital services group Konecta confirmed that its first global Generative AI Centre of Excellence – based in Egypt – has grown to 600 professionals and is on track to reach 800 by the end of 2026, working toward a longer-term target of 3,000 employees. The centre, opened under a $100 million, five-year investment agreement signed with Egypt's Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) in January 2025, designs and deploys Konecta's generative and agentic AI solutions – including its newly launched Kolibri platform – for more than 500 clients worldwide, delivering services in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Egypt's Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Raafat Hendy, described the expansion as reflecting Egypt's growing ability “to attract global investments and deliver high-value digital services to global markets.”
Why this matters for AI academies: A committed, multi-year AI employer scaling toward 3,000 roles in one LMIC hub is a concrete talent-pipeline opportunity – academies in Egypt and the wider region should establish direct contact with Konecta and ITIDA about internships, curriculum alignment and graduate placement now, while the centre is still actively hiring toward its 800-by-year-end milestone.
