For AI academies, this webinar will showcase the sorts of AI products and services already being provided in other developing countries to meet the new 2.2 billion person market that is now emerging. These are the sorts of practical products and services that you should be training your students to develop so that they too can become local AI entrepreneurs to service the huge previously underserved market that is now emerging, or to even provide the connectivity that this potential market needs.

1. AFRICAN UNION HAILS ETHIOPIA'S NEW ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE UNIVERSITY AS A POTENTIAL CONTINENTAL "TORCHBEARER"
Sophia Ashipala, head of the African Union's Education Division, told ENA this week that Ethiopia's newly approved Medemer Artificial Intelligence University - the first dedicated AI university of its kind on the continent, approved by Ethiopia's Council of Ministers in March 2026 - has the potential to position the country as a continental technology leader. "It is a great move, really, for Ethiopia to establish this AI University, the first of its kind," Ashipala said, describing the institution as a "torchbearer" and "frontrunner." She linked the initiative to the AU's wider education agenda and urged that strengthening foundational learning remain central even as AI capacity expands. ICT-sector leaders from Ghana, Egypt and Zimbabwe separately welcomed the initiative this week as a model other African governments could replicate to build homegrown AI capability, strengthen data sovereignty and reduce dependence on foreign technology.
Why this matters for AI academies: This is a live model worth studying directly: a government approving a dedicated, standalone AI university rather than folding AI into existing computer-science faculties, publicly endorsed by the African Union as a "torchbearer" for the continent. WAAA member academies can use this endorsement as leverage when lobbying their own ministries of education for dedicated AI faculties, funding or accreditation, and should watch for details of Medemer's curriculum and research agenda as a potential benchmark or partnership opportunity.

2. KENYA'S NEW AI POLICY CONSULTATION HAS REAL CURRICULUM AND CAREER-GUIDANCE IMPLICATIONS
On 24 July, Kenya's Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy opened public consultation on its draft Artificial Intelligence and Other Emerging Technologies Policy, open for submissions until Tuesday 4 August. Alongside innovation and skills goals, the draft policy proposes formal labour standards duty-of-care obligations, mental-health support, transparent contracting and grievance mechanisms - for the workers who train, label and moderate AI systems for companies worldwide. The proposal follows years of litigation and testimony from content moderators employed via Sama in Nairobi, some of whom reported post-traumatic stress after reviewing graphic material for major technology companies; a KICTANet-affiliated study found 27% of surveyed moderators reported significant mental-health distress.
Why this matters for AI academies: Many graduates of AI, data-science and IT programmes across LMICs go on to work in AI annotation, labelling and moderation roles - exactly the workforce this draft policy would protect. Academies should ensure their curricula and career guidance make students aware of the working conditions and mental-health risks documented in this sector and could use Kenya's draft duty-of-care standards as a live teaching case in AI ethics and responsible-AI-deployment modules. Academies with a public-policy or ethics faculty might consider making a submission before the 4 August deadline.

3. A UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS GRADUATE'S LOCAL-LANGUAGE AI PROJECT SHOWS WHAT APPLIED-AI STUDENTS SHOULD BE BUILDING
Over the past year, a string of small, largely undisclosed acquisitions has swept through Africa's AI sector: Nigerian text-to-speech platform YarnGPT - which reads text aloud in Nigerian-accented English as well as Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa, and was founded by University of Lagos graduate Saheed Azeez - was bought by pan-African IT group Bluechip Technologies. South African restaurant-management platform Dyner.ai was bought by payments company Yoco, and two Egyptian-founded start-ups, voice-AI company PlayAI and DevOps agent Stakpak, were acquired by Meta and Vercel respectively within the same week. Analysts say buyers are not chasing better algorithms - foundation models are increasingly commoditised - but "context": local-language capability and deep familiarity with a specific market that a general-purpose AI system cannot easily replicate.
Why this matters for AI academies: YarnGPT is a direct, current example of a graduate-led, locally grounded applied-AI project turning into a real acquisition - exactly the kind of language- or sector-specific project WAAA academies should be encouraging final-year and postgraduate students to build, rather than only recreating generic wrapper products around large foreign models. Worth using as a live case study in entrepreneurship and applied-AI modules this term, alongside a candid discussion that most of these deals remain small (hundreds of thousands to low millions of dollars), so students should see this as a viable path, not a guaranteed windfall. 4. LIBERIA DECLARES ANNUAL "TECHNOLOGY SUMMIT DAY," PAIRS POLICY WITH A STARTUP WORLD CUP PITCH STAGE
President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. has proclaimed 21 July as "Liberia Technology Summit Day," a permanent annual national platform to promote innovation and strengthen digital governance, announced at the 2026 Liberia Technology Summit in Monrovia. The proclamation builds on Executive Order No. 163 (signed 22 April 2026), which established a permanent Office of Technology, Digitization and Innovation (OTDI) inside the Office of the President. Beyond government reforms, this year's summit incorporated the global Startup World Cup competition, giving Liberian technology entrepreneurs the chance to connect directly with international investors and venture capital firms, with support from partners including Orange Liberia and Afreximbank.
Why this matters for AI academies: Liberia's summit deliberately combined government digital-transformation announcements with real investor access for young founders - a national, government-backed platform that academies elsewhere should note as a template worth proposing to your own government or telecoms ministry. Worth watching as Liberia's OTDI develops its education and skills programmes, and worth considering whether your own academy's students could be entered into future editions of the Startup World Cup or similar regional pitch competitions.

5. DONOR-BACKED AI HEALTH TOOLS SPREAD ACROSS AFRICA β BUT SUSTAINABILITY REMAINS THE MISSING PIECE
A study published this week by Salient Advisory, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, identified at least 20 AI-enabled tools now deployed across African health supply chains. Examples include an Ethiopian government-mandated forecasting platform (ForLab Plus, used by more than 5,700 public health facilities) that claims to have helped avoid $38 million in planned procurement expenditure, and a Kenyan procurement-planning tool (SMArT) that has cut planning time from days to under an hour per facility across roughly 1,000 facilities in five counties. But of five solutions examined in depth, only one - Distripha, a commercial pharmacy-inventory platform in Morocco and Spain - generates meaningful revenue directly from users; the rest remain dependent on grant funding, with the report warning that "evidence of cost savings appears thin."
Why this matters for AI academies: This is a rich, real-world case study for applied-AI, health-informatics or entrepreneurship modules: concrete before-and-after figures, named tools and institutions, and a frank warning that only one of five deeply examined ventures has found a sustainable business model. Use it to teach students the difference between a working pilot and a fundable, sustainable AI business - arguably the single most important lesson for anyone hoping to become an AI entrepreneur in this sector.
